Is it curtains for Khan coupledom and on with the terribly English, terribly love-troubled actor Hugh Grant? Is Imran''s prize catch finally looking for a change of cast?

On Wednesday night, both Jemima and Hugh absented themselves from one of the British capital''s premier society events.
No one was sure if they stayed home together, but the joint no-show seemed especially suspicious after a weekend of tittle-tattle about the dishy blonde and Liz Hurley''s comic-romantic, wavy-haired former boyfriend.

Though no official explanations were offered, the actor''s aides had reportedly telephoned the Serpentine Summer Party''s office and asked about the likely media presence.

Grant, it seemed, did not want to become fodder for yet more hungry media hordes. But the hordes were meant to be out in force at the smartest, sassiest and fizziest party of the London summer. Grant elected not to attend. Jemima did so too.

Amused commentators said Grant appeared to have gone all shy because of the rising tide of tittle-tattle about the fervour and frequency with which he has been squiring another man''s wife around town.

Just days ago, the couple who refuse to admit they''re an item, were seen having had rather a good time. Especially suspicious was their choice of venue – Annabel''s – the nightclub where Jemima first met her husband as a 21-year-old ingénue besotted enough to convert to Islam, cover up and take the name Haiqa.

For a woman who officially left the marital home in Pakistan to complete a Masters degree at London''s School of Oriental and African Studies, Jemima appeared to be doing suspiciously little studying. And Grant appeared to be helping her junk the books with extraordinary thoroughness.

Social butterflies affirm that Jemima''s bookwork appears seriously behind, possibly lengthening Mrs Khan''s so-called "temporary arrangement (of a London address)".

Only a matter of time then before the old headlines reappear – Khan they survive?
